School of Computer and Communication Engineering (SCCE) and School of Microelectronic Engineering (SOME), Universiti Malaysia Perlis (UniMAP) in collaboration with Prince Songkla University have successfully organized the 2016 3rd International Conference on Electronic Design (ICED 2016) from 11th to 12th August 2016 at Graceland Hotel, Phuket, Thailand.

The 3rd International Conference on Electronic Design (ICED) 2016 is a sequel to the previous conferences successfully held in 2008 and 2014. It aims to provide a platform to professionals, researchers, academicians and industries to share and generate interest in cutting-edge applications, challenges and issues in the area of Electronics and Computer Applications for Internet of Things. The theme of the conference has been chosen in view of the current revolution and rapid developments in the field of electronics and communication design. Furthermore, Internet of Things allows objects to be sensed and controlled remotely across existing network infrastructure, creating opportunities for more direct integration between the physical world and computer-based systems and resulting in improved efficiency, accuracy, and economic benefit.  ICED 2016 is an international symposium that covers seven major areas of research: Communication and Wireless Sensor Networks; Analog and Digital Integrated Circuits; Nanoelectronics and Bio-Chips; Application Specific IoT; Network Connectivity and Data Security; Control and Automation Systems; and Embedded Systems and SoC Applications. ICED 2016 was technically Co-Sponsored by IEEE Circuit and System Chapter (CAS). Also, ICED 2016 was approved by Board of Engineers Malaysia (BEM). Hence, participants received 8 Professional Development Programme (PDP) credit towards their professional career development.

The conference was inaugurated by a welcome message from the ICED 2016 general chair, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Rizalafande Che Ismail. He congratulated the authors, presenters and thanked the Sponsors (UniMAP, Rohde & Schwarz Malaysia Sdn. Bhd, Trans-comm Multimedia Sdn. Bhd., Robust Technologies, COMREL Technologies Sdn Bhd. and Bayu Kelulut Smart Digital Farm Sdn. Bhd) for their financial support. He also thanked all of the organizing team members for their dedicated work to make the conference a success. He addressed the participants with motivational words that such a conference would benefit all participants, the industry, academics and researchers as a whole. In the end, he expressed his very warm welcome to all participants and guests of the conference.  Followed by the welcome speech, the general chair then presents small tokens of appreciation to the Honorable Assoc. Prof. Dr. Worawut Wisutmethangoon, Vice President of PSU and Prof. Amara Amara, IEEE CASS ExCom, Vice-President for Conferences, President IEEE France Section. Then, took place the official opening ceremony of ICED 2016 by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Rizalafande by cutting the ribbon of the conference banner.

After that, the first keynote speech was given by Mr. Mohd Parid Sulaiman from Intel Malaysia on IoT - Trends in Industrial Automation with the Intel IoT Platform”. Mr. M Parid is responsible for Module Development/Engineering/Ops for Intel Architecture Group - Malaysia Site Strategic Initiatives. Over the past few years, he had held engineering and program management positions for the Intel Client Board Division covering headcount in US, China, Malaysia, and Taiwan. The first session ended around1.00 p.m after an interesting Q&A session. Then, there was a short tea break for all guests and participants before continuing to next session which was the second keynote speech. The second keynote speech was given by Professor Dr.Srisakdi Charmonman, Father of Thai IoT and Mr. Pornphisud Mongkhonvanit, President of Thailand Chapter of the Internet Society,”Various Aspects of Internet of Things Designs”. The third keynote speech was given by Dr. Panachit Kittipanya-Ngam, Assistant Director of Innovation Center, True Corporation Public Company Limited on  “Cities: Unlocking Innovation from Open Data”.

Parallel oral presentation of 121 accepted papers (after going through at least two blind reviews) was carried out within two days. The symposium was attended by many international and domestic participants including presenters, general participants, keynote Speakers, Industry participants, Deans, committee members and students.

The conference closing ceremony was held at 5.00 p.m. on the second day (12th August 2016). The conference chair, Dr. Muammar Mohammad Isa, gave the crisp summary of the conference. He announced the THREE Best Paper Awards among all presented papers in ICED 2016. The event dispersed at around 6.30 pm.
