On 5th January 2017, a group of 20 students from EKT336 Computer Network course went for Academic Visit to TM Stesen Kabel Dasar Laut Kuala Muda. This trip was organized by C2Bytes Club and School of Computer and Communication Engineering and on the day, the trip also been followed by the Lecturer of EKT336, Dr. Ku Nurul Fazira Ku Azir and Lecturer of EKT335, Dr. Naimah Yaakob.

The visit was part of the course activities in order to expose the students how the theory they learned in the class being applied into the real environment and in the industries. The objectives of the visit are:

  1. To expose to the students how maintenance of computer networks being coordinated and managed by Telekom Malaysia.
  2. To expose to the students, the working cultural and job scope in the field of computer networks.
  3. To enhance the commitment, awareness, cooperation, and sense of responsibility of students to classes and learning.
  4. To increase student’s motivation to achieve better learning.

The trip was departing from Dewan Ilmu, UniMAP at 8 am and arrived at the TM Stesen Kabel Dasar Laut Kuala Muda by 1030am. We were welcomed by the Station Manager Submarine Cable Services Transmission & International Network Management (TINM) Mr. Mohd Farid Mizan. He also later then made a presentation on the main works that took place in the station and how the station actually coordinates the Malaysia network of communication to the Europe and other countries.  Later on, Mr. Faiz who is the Submarine Engineer briefly explained the work that he has to do when the is a faulty optic cable under the sea. 

The 3 hours’ explanation of computer networks and knowledge of submarine engineering does really open student’s eyes into exploring a new area and topic of interest. Later on, 5 lucky students who manage to answer a quiz questions from Mr. Farid was given a token of appreciation. Before we left back to UniMAP, the students were given a quick tour to the equipment room where all the servers of the communication been kept.
