On 9th September 2017, School of Computer and Communicaiton Engineering in collaboration with the Elvira System Sdn. Bhd and IEEE UniMAP Student Branch had successfully run the Think Big with Code: Introduction to Micro:bit Workshop. This workshop is targetting at providing coding/programming skills using Micro:bit to secondary and primary schools students aged between 10 to 16 years old.

In today’s digital world, coding is a fundamental skill alongside math, reading, and science, but too few children have the opportunity to learn to program because it is rarely taught in school. Programming is becoming an essential skill in nearly every modern industry. In fact, it’s predicted that by 2020 there will be 1 million more computer science/engineering jobs that computer science/engineering students. But more than any of that, when though concurrently programming can be a whole heap of fun. With an emphasis on application, the program steers away from code syntax or the conventional of any specific language and keeps the focus on making code fun.

Think Big with Code’s mission is to create a fun and engaging platform where children/students not only learn to program but also have opportunities to be creative using code. Introducing the children the importance of programming concepts in a gentle visual programming interface, they will understand how everyday objects are a mix of both hardware and software and go on to create their own inventions, which become their life skills learned.

The objective of this workshop is :

  1. To introduce the tools, techniques, and ideas kids can use to inspire fun and creativity in programming.
  2. To teach kids that learning to code is an amazingly practical and hugely rewarding hobby and skills for kids of all ages.
